Doug Buckminster, a longtime executive and former Vice Chairman of American Express, is set to retire in March 2026, marking the end of a nearly four-decade career with the global financial services company.
Buckminster, who spent approximately 40 years at American Express, joined the organization in 1985 and steadily rose through multiple leadership positions. Over the course of his tenure, he held senior roles including Group President of Global Consumer Services, President of Global Network & International Card Services, and President of International Consumer and Small Business Services.
In 2021, he was appointed Vice Chairman of American Express, where he played a key role in shaping the company’s strategic direction. His responsibilities included overseeing global growth initiatives, customer experience strategy, and the expansion of Amex’s premium consumer offerings across international markets.
Company leadership has credited Buckminster with helping to strengthen American Express’s position as one of the world’s leading premium financial brands. His work contributed to initiatives focused on digital transformation, risk management, and global expansion, as well as the continued growth of the company’s Membership Rewards ecosystem.
The announcement of his retirement noted that Buckminster’s departure would conclude a long and influential career marked by leadership development, strategic innovation, and deep involvement in the company’s global operations.
Although widely associated with American Express’s New York headquarters, Buckminster has also maintained professional and personal ties to the Phoenix, Arizona region, where he is frequently referenced in business leadership circles.
